Culture

The culture of the Canary Islands is a vibrant mixture of rich history and diverse influences. Each of the eight islands in the archipelago has its own unique identity, shaped by a blend of Spanish, African, and Latin American traditions. The indigenous Guanches, who were the original inhabitants, have left a lasting legacy that is still evident today in various cultural expressions, such as their art, language, and customs. This fusion of cultures is reflected in the islands’ architecture, festivals, and everyday life, creating a unique and welcoming atmosphere for both residents and visitors.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Canarian culture is its music and dance. Traditional folk music, known as “Isas”, is characterized by its lively rhythms and is often accompanied by dances that are performed during local festivals and celebrations. These festivals, such as the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, are displays of color, music, and dance, drawing visitors from around the world. The islands are also known for their unique sports, such as Canarian wrestling and the whistled language of La Gomera, “Silbo Gomero”, which is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The culinary traditions of the Canary Islands also play a significant role in their cultural identity. The cuisine is a delightful blend of Spanish and African influences, featuring dishes such as “papas arrugadas” (wrinkled potatoes) served with “mojo” sauce, and fresh seafood. Local markets are a testament to the islands’ agricultural heritage, offering a variety of fresh produce, cheeses, and wines. The islands’ gastronomy is celebrated through numerous food festivals and events, where both locals and visitors can savor the unique flavors of Canarian cuisine. This rich culinary tradition, combined with the islands’ warm hospitality, makes the Canary Islands a truly unique cultural destination.

Visa Requirements for Spain

When planning a company retreat to the Canary Islands, it’s important to understand visa requirements for your team. Spain is part of the Schengen area, so some travelers will need a tourist visa, but the process is straightforward.

Travelers who will need a visa to enter Spain have to submit the Schengen visa application through the official procedure.

The national visa allows the holder to travel to Spain and to transit through and move around the territory of any Schengen State for a maximum of 90 days. However, it does not automatically entitle them to enter the Schengen area. The border authorities can refuse entry if not all entry requirements are met – see section "Conditions for entry into Spain".

Always check the official website for current information about visas.

Fun Facts you didn’t know about the Canary Islands

The archipelago was created by volcanic eruptions

The Canary Islands, an archipelago located off the northwest coast of Africa, were formed millions of years ago through a series of volcanic eruptions. This geological activity gave rise to the unique and diverse landscapes found across the islands. The oldest island in the chain is Fuerteventura, followed by Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, and the youngest, El Hierro. Each island has its own distinct geological features and ecosystems.

Canary bird was named after the Canaries

Interestingly, the canary bird was named after the Canary Islands, not the other way around. The name of the archipelago itself originates from the Latin word for dog, “canaria”. There are several theories about this naming. One theory suggests that early European explorers encountered large dogs on the islands. Another theory suggests that the name refers to "sea dogs", which were abundant in the surrounding sea waters at the time.

The Canary Islands have two capital cities

Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, located on the two largest islands of the Canary archipelago, together hold the status of capital. This unique arrangement requires the President of the Canary Islands to alternate his official seat between these two cities every four years. This system ensures that both cities equally share the administrative responsibilities and benefits of being the capital, reflecting the historical and cultural significance of each city within the archipelago.

Home to the third highest volcano in the world

After Hawaii’s Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, Teide in Tenerife is the world’s third highest volcano and the highest point in the whole of Spain!

Teide, or Mount Teide, is an active stratovolcano, standing at 3,715 meters. Its formation began around 170,000 years ago following a massive landslide. It last erupted in 1909 and is part of the Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. The park is a major tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors annually, and is also home to the Teide Observatory, an important astronomical research facility.

La Gomera has its own whistling language

Silbo Gomero, also known as “Gomeran whistle”, is a unique whistled language used by the inhabitants of La Gomera in the Canary Islands. Historically, it was developed to communicate across the island’s deep ravines and narrow valleys, allowing messages to be exchanged over distances of up to five kilometers. Silbo Gomero transposes Spanish speech into whistles, using a reduced set of phonemes to emulate Spanish phonology. Despite a decline in use during the mid-20th century, revitalization efforts began in the late 1990s, and it has been taught in schools since 1999. In 2009, UNESCO recognized Silbo Gomero as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The Canaries hold 4 out of Spain’s 12 national parks

Given their size compared to mainland Spain, this is quite remarkable! The four national parks are Caldera de Taburiente National Park on La Palma, Garajonay National Park on La Gomera, Timanfaya National Park on Lanzarote, and Tenerife’s Teide National Park – the most visited national park in Europe.

The Spanish Civil War started in the Canaries

At the onset of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Francisco Franco served as the General Commandant of the Canary Islands, with his headquarters in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. Franco and his associates devised their plans in the Canaries, away from the attention of the rest of Spain, before advancing to the mainland.

There is a volcano powered oven

Although there are no active volcanoes on Lanzarote at present, the island experienced significant volcanic activity between 1730 and 1736, during which over 100 volcanoes emerged. The last eruption occurred in 1824, but substantial heat remains just below the surface. At Timanfaya National Park, visitors can explore El Diablo Restaurant, where several demonstrations showcase this subterranean heat. In one demonstration, straw thrown into a hole ignites instantly due to the intense heat. In another, water poured into a hole erupts into a tower of steam. The restaurant features a 9-meter-deep hole that taps into this geothermal heat, which is used to grill food at temperatures reaching 400°C without any additional energy.
